As a Kitten

We have a general policy regarding our kittens.  We keep all kittens until they are at least 3 months old.  This not only gives us adequate time to evaluate them, but also allows the kittens to become accustomed to normal household activities.  When a kitten is placed in its new home as a pet, it is altered and has started its shot series.

When looking for a Birman kitty, you should consider the following information.  If your family is active, look for an outgoing kitten or cat.  If you have a quieter home and prefer a kitty that is content to sit in your lap all day, pick a kitty with a quieter temperament.  As for being talkative, the Birman has a soft, sweet voice, but will gladly respond to you if you constantly answer kitty’s meows and talk back.  Generally, we describe the personality as not as demonstrative as the Siamese, but not as laid back as the Persian.

We recommend to our new owners that they comb through their Birman’s hair at least once weekly to keep the skin used to the weight of the teeth of the comb.  Kitty learns to enjoy this and it makes it easier to groom during heavy shedding.  The texture of the Birman coat is like bunny fur and has a tendency not to mat.

When you buy a kitty from us, we have a Sales Agreement that both parties sign.  In it we discuss the care we expect our new owners to give their new kitty.  We also insist that kitty not be declawed or be allowed outside to roam.

Birmans thrive in a loving atmosphere.  They are great family pets.  Of course, we think “the more the merrier,” but Birmans are very adaptable and do well by themselves or in a crowd.
